Notre Dame New Uniforms

Hate it or Love it?

Nike "Gold Digging" Shirt called "Sexist"

Is Nike's "Gold Digging" Shirt Sexist or Supportive?

Nike released this shirt with the label "Gold Digging" to stores recently in support of the success of the USA women olympians. This shirt is being called sexist because the term gold digger is not looked highly upon. Urban Dictionary defines a gold digger as "Any woman whose primary interest in a relationship is material benefits. A woman who cares more about a man's bank account than she does about the man. "  Nike labeled the shirts gold digger in light of the many gold medals that were brought home from London this Summer. The main problem people are having with the shirt is the fact that it is only made for women.

Nike was an official outfitter for the London Olympics, so they put out many apparel. None getting criticized as much as this one. Certain women feel the shirt condescends the effort of the women athletes that achieved their golds though hard work. The term gold digging makes it seem as if they did not have to work for it.

In my opinion people need to pull their emotions out of it and take the shirt and term at face value. Nike is known for having catchy shirts with short, witty sayings on them. This is just another example of one that people are taking out of context. We first need to look at what the term gold digging actually means, and not the urban saying that comes to mind when it is said. The act of gold digging is just what it implies, digging for gold. What did the female athletes do at the olympics? They fought, competed, and in a way dug, for their hard earned gold medals.

Looking at it this way, I give Nike the pass as they were just trying to find a witty way to refer to the success of the women in London. The only fault Nike had was the fact that they did not make the shirt for men also. This is what made it seem sexist, but Nike tends to have different sayings on their men's and women's shirts. Though Nike knew what they were doing by putting "Gold digging" on the women's shirts, I believe anyone who gets offended by this is just looking for something to offend them. This shirt is definitely going to continue to make headlines, but  all in all Nike made these shirts to support our women, not attack their work ethic.

Comment below what you think about Nike's racy shirts, and vote on the polls to the right.

Lebron James Makes History, Again

Lebron James bullying the poor Australian defender

Lebron James posts first triple double in Team USA Basketball history

It is safe to say Lebron James is the most dominant basketball player in the world today, and he showed it this afternoon against Australia. James posted the first ever triple double for Team USA in Olympic history. America has hosted greats like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Kobe Bryant , but never have any of them reached the stat line James put up. He finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. These are the stat lines that we are used to seeing from him in the NBA (with a few more points), but it is more uncommon in FIBA play.

As for the way the game played out, Team USA did away with Australia fairly easily. Like I expected, The Australians kept it within reach for the first half or so, but with the help of Kobe Bryant channeling his inner Afro Kobe, Team USA eliminated Patty Mills and Australia 119-86. Kobe Bryant got hot and hit about 3 straight 3-pointers back to back within the span of a minute. This proved how dominant Team USA can be. They have so many players who can look unstoppable at anytime, and Bryant was the one who showed up and showed off this time.

Team USA takes on Argentina this Friday and this is a must-see. Argentina will put up a tough fight, but they lack the skill and star power to actually beat the Americans. Another thing to look out for is the foul play that Argentina is notorious for. This is why I hope America lays the pipe down on them and never lets up. Nevertheless this will be a fun game to watch and expect Team USA to easily make it to the finals against Spain/Russia.

Michael Phelps, Greatest Olympian Ever

Michael Phelps, Most decorated Olympian of all time. (22 total medals, 18 gold)

Michael Phelps is the Greatest Olympian of All time

Jamaica, Argentina, India, Iran, Czech Republic, North Korea, Mexico, and Egypt. What do these major countries all have in common? Less gold medals all-time than the great Michael Phelps. Surprised? Well I have a couple more statistics for you. The country of Mexico has had a whopping 21 total medals since 1988. Phelps has had 22 since 2004. You know that great country above America, Canada. Well since 1996 Canada has had a grand total of 13 gold medals. That is 5 less than the 18 golds Michael has garnered in that same time period.

When Michael Phelps got out of the water in London for the last time there was a funny feeling in the air. The same as when Michael Jordan retired...the second time. Or when Ali hung up the gloves and when Gretzky took off the skates. As a fan we feel saddened to watch a great hang it up, but for the competitors in the respective sports, there is a sigh of relief. Now that Michael Phelps is done swimming, other people actually have a chance to win. There is now room for the next big star in swimming, and I'm anxious to see who it will be.

After looking over those statistics and witnessing his greatness over the past 3 Olympics, it is hard to not say he is the greatest Olympian of all time. If you believe there is anyone else that can be called the greatest olympian of all time, please comment and let me know.

Why USA Basketball Will Go Undefeated

First off, Team USA Basketball is not the Dream Team. The commentators and analysts of the Olympics are really annoying me when they say things like "Kevin Durant of the Dream Team." There was only one Dream Team and that was the team of 1992. That is no knock at all to this year's team which is still overall great, just not as dominant or great as the Dream Team. Now let me step off my soapbox and get to the point:

Team USA Basketball will go undefeated

As for all of the questions surrounding this team and their lack of size, I have one answer for all of those questions. Lebron James. It seems that whenever Team USA is in need of a key bucket or a run, King James comes up big. He has taken his championship winning mindset to London and oppositions beware. The only difference is instead of an injured Dyane Wade he has Kevin Durant in his prime. Instead of his pet dinosaur, Chris Bosh, he has Carmelo Anthony. Instead of broke back Mike Miller he has a rejuvenated Kobe. If you are wondering why Kobe is so rejuvenated let's just say it might not have much to do with his wife Vanessa. I hear Kobe has been having more than his share of fun in the Olympic Village this year.
Kobe didn't become the second leading scorer by just sitting around
Or did he?

However that is besides the point. This USA team may lack the size that the other international teams have, but I would take Lebron, Kobe, and Durant over the Gasol brothers and Ibaka any day. America is too good on the defensive side of the ball and too prolific of scorers to lose this year. What they lack in size they make up for with speed and athleticism. This team is not the sort of team that is going to blowout every team they face. They just don't have the dominance in the paint to do so. They are built to run teams, and that is what they have been doing so far this summer.

When Team USA is on we see 83-point blowouts. Poor Nigeria. And when they are not hitting shots like they would like it turns into close games. The problem for other teams is the fact that Team USA is going to be tough to beat in the closing minutes. Lithuania gave the Americans a scare, but Lebron took over in the 4th quarter to lead Team USA to victory. Lebron will continue to show up when he is needed, and America will not lose a game this summer. Even with all of the hype surrounding them, they are poised to win gold and there is no team strong enough to get in their way.
Expect to see this again soon.

Team USA has an upcoming showdown with Argentina this Monday to complete pool play and I expect this one not to be close. Argentina is led by San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, and they have a pretty decent squad around him. And by decent I mean dirty. This is going to be physical and trying game, but America has the more skilled athletes and Argentina does not stand a chance.

Make sure you tune in to watch Team USA take on Argentina Monday, August 6.

London 2012 Olympics Medal Count and Prediction

(Medal Count as of August 2nd, 12:34)

The United States of America just surpassed China in total medals, but that is not good enough for America. The next goal is to finally close the gap China holds over the US in gold medals. The lead is down to three which won't be an easy task, but America should be able to make the push with track and field starting up this afternoon and the swimming finals coming to a close.
USA women's 4x200m swimming gold medalists
Though the Chinese have improved at swimming this Olympics, they still have a disadvantage against America. Look for Rebecca Soni to win the women's 200m breaststroke final this afternoon, and it is a lock for the men to pull out at least 2 more gold medals. Then Missy Franklin is looking to be the favorite for the women's 200m backstroke. With athletes like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, and Missy Franklin, The USA should feel comfortable finishing strong in London.

Michael Phelps
Also Track and Field is starting soon and The USA have proven strong in the past Olympics. Just last year Team USA won 7 gold medals compared to China's whopping 0 on the track. Though we have the edge here, China will continue to win gold in those events that we have never heard of. Thus making the gold medal gap almost as hard to close as the national debt we owe them. Let's just hope America can win the gold medal count these Olympics so we can credit 2008 to China's home court advantage. Spoiler Alert!! America will finish on top, but have fun watching the rest of London 2012. As long as the Brazil stays strong in beach volleyball, I know I will. (If you dare to google "Brazil Beach Volleyball", please be prepared to erase your internet history.)

Can't finish this post without congratulating the fab five! I heard they won Gold in gymnastics. Thats a great feat at their age.
